Book publishing

Books worth
keeping.

Nexton's book division acquires, edits, produces and distributes non-fiction titles in print, ebook and audio editions. We publish a small list each year so that every book receives full editorial, design and sales attention.

We work with subject specialists, practitioners and journalists, and we hold books to the same sourcing and accuracy standards as our editorial desks.

What we do in-house

Acquisitions

We review proposals and manuscripts against a clear editorial fit: subject authority, readership and long-term value of the title.

Development editing

Structural work on argument, chapter architecture and voice, with the author involved at every stage.

Copy-editing & proofreading

Two independent passes, fact-checking of claims and figures, and a documented style sheet for each title.

Design & typesetting

Cover design and interior typography developed per title, produced for print, ebook and audio editions.

Production & print

Print and print-on-demand production, paper and binding specification, and ebook and audiobook conversion.

Sales & distribution

Distribution to retail and online booksellers, library and wholesale channels, and direct sales.

Marketing & publicity

Launch planning, review outreach, and promotion across our own publications and newsletters.

Rights & licensing

Translation, serial, audio and subsidiary rights handled in-house with transparent reporting to the author.

From proposal to publication

  1. 01 — Proposal

Send a proposal of no more than ten pages: subject, argument, intended readership, comparable titles, chapter outline and author background.

  2. 02 — First review

Every submission is read by an acquisitions editor. We respond to all proposals, usually within six weeks.

  3. 03 — Sample material

If the fit is right, we ask for a sample chapter and discuss scope, length and schedule with you.

  4. 04 — Offer & contract

A written offer sets out advance, royalty rates, rights granted, schedule and the editorial process in plain language.

  5. 05 — Editorial & production

Development editing, copy-editing, design and production, with agreed milestones and author approval at proof stage.

  6. 06 — Publication

Print, ebook and, where suitable, audio editions published simultaneously, with distribution and marketing in place from day one.

Rights & permissions

Translation, audio and serial rights.

Rights in our titles are handled in-house. We license translation, serial, audio, book-club and extract rights, and we work with co-agents in selected territories.

Permission requests for quotation, reproduction or classroom use should include the title, the passage or figure concerned, and the intended use and print run.

Our commitment to authors

Plain-language contracts
Rights granted, term and reversion stated clearly. No hidden fees and no author-paid publication charges.
Transparent royalties
Royalty statements twice a year with channel-level sales detail.
Editorial independence
Commercial relationships never determine the content or conclusions of a title.
Credit & attribution
Authors, editors, translators and illustrators are credited in every edition.

We are a traditional publisher: we never ask authors to pay towards the cost of publication.

Submissions

We read every proposal.

We accept unagented proposals in the subject areas listed above. Send a single PDF containing your proposal, a chapter outline, a sample chapter and a short biography. Please do not send complete manuscripts with a first approach.

We currently publish in English only, and we do not consider fiction, poetry or children's books.
